The best brief

The official TUP diamond and white wordmark sit above a bold Jost headline reading, The best brief starts with the decision. A separate magenta label reads, Not the design. Most presentation briefs start too late. “Make it look better” is not a brief. Before anyone touches a slide, I need three answers: Who is the audience? What do they need to understand? What decision should the presentation move them towards? Get those right and the story becomes clearer. The structure becomes simpler. Design finally has a job. The best brief starts with the decision, not the design.

“Make it look better” is not a brief. A useful brief tells you who the audience is, what they need to understand and what decision the presentation needs to move them towards. Get that right first. Then design has a job.

“Make it look better” is not a brief. A useful brief starts with the audience and the decision. Who needs to understand this? What are they struggling to see? What do they need to believe or do next? Those answers shape the story, the structure and every design choice that follows. Get the decision clear first. Then design has a job.

“Make it look better” is not a brief. Start here: Who is the audience? What do they need to understand? What decision should this presentation help them make? Answer those first. Then the story becomes clearer. The structure becomes simpler. And the design finally has a job. theunspokenpitch.com

Most presentation problems start before the first slide is designed. If the audience, message and decision are unclear, the presentation will be unclear too. A proper brief gets those answers straight first. Then the story, structure and design can do their jobs.

The clarity test

A crowded slide usually is not a design problem. It is a decision problem. The presenter has not decided what the audience needs to believe, so every fact gets equal weight. Before redesigning the slide, finish this sentence: “When the audience leaves this slide, I need them to believe…” If you cannot finish it cleanly, design will not save you. One slide. One point. Make the decision obvious.

A crowded slide says: “I could not decide what matters, so I brought everything.” Before redesigning it, finish this sentence: “When the audience leaves this slide, I need them to believe…” The slide gets clearer only after the decision does.

A crowded slide says: “I could not decide what matters, so I brought everything.” That is not thoroughness. It is a transfer of work to the audience. Before redesigning the slide, finish this sentence: “When the audience leaves this slide, I need them to believe…” If the answer is not clear, design will not save it. The slide gets clearer only after the decision does.

Same story, rebuilt to be repeated

Same company. Same product. Same proof. A completely different level of understanding. Opioid Clinical Management had a real product and real proof, but its sales deck made insurance brokers work too hard to find the point. We sharpened the message and rebuilt the presentation so a gatekeeper could grasp the value and retell it. Because if the story cannot be repeated, it rarely reaches the buyer.
